HomeMy WebLinkAboutNational Preparedness MonthPrackintafinn Vi1i ge of Morton Grove WHEREAS, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), along with local emergency managers are encouraging Illinoisans to take time to prepare for potential emergencies at home, at work, and in their communities at large; and WHEREAS, these activities will contribute to a level of local and national preparedness that is critical for a community disaster and general emergency planning; and WHEREAS, the ongoing battle against COVID-19 underscores the importance of building a culture and mindset of preparedness which includes an appropriate disaster plan that meets the needs of the community and each individual family group; and WHEREAS, preparedness is more than building a kit, it is about education, communication, and mitigation which can help to provide a foundation for an expedited recovery which in turn instills confidence in everyone that they can meet any challenge that arises; and WHEREAS, during this month, residents are encouraged to consider the following guidelines when evaluating and improving upon their family's emergency plan: • Make a plan for when a disaster- strikes. Plan different scenarios that could impact your work, school, or family routine, • Build a kit. A kit should include basic survival items necessary for your family in an emergency situation such as food, water, a weather radio, batteries, medication, and various supplies for each member of your household. That kit should also to include face masks, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting wipes so you are prepared before a disaster strikes. It is important to keep a kit not only at home, but at work and in your car as well. • Make sure you are prepared. Keeping a two week supply of groceries in your home will aid you if you need to be quarantined. Practice drills at home so you and your family are fully prepared and knowledgeable and know where to go. • Remember to include children in your preparations. One quarter of the U.S. population is make up of children. They also need a few extra items in their kits which could include a favorite stuffed animal, a board game, books and music to help comfort them in a disaster; and WHEREAS, IEMA offers disaster preparedness information as a one-stop resource for detailed information on what to do before, during, and after a disaster at www.ready.iliinois.gov. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Daniel P. DiMaria, Mayor of the Village of Morton Grove, Illinois, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2020, as NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH IN ILLINOIS and call upon everyone in the Village to observe this month by developing their own home emergency preparedness plan and supply kit.
